When people hear the phrase “non-emergency medical transportation,” they often assume it’s complicated. It’s not. NEMT simply means scheduled transportation to and from medical appointments for patients who do not require an ambulance. If you live in the Bronx and have Medicaid, you may already qualify.

What NEMT Is and Isn’t

NEMT is not an ambulance service. It’s not for emergencies. It’s for everyday medical trips that Medicaid patients need — dialysis three times a week, physical therapy after surgery, a specialist visit in Manhattan, a hospital follow-up. The “non-emergency” part simply means the patient is medically stable and doesn’t require emergency care during transport.

Who Provides NEMT in the Bronx?

Medicaid managed care plans in NYC contract with licensed transportation companies to provide NEMT. These companies — like Metro Luxury — are required to be TLC-licensed, fully insured, and trained in patient transport. The ride is scheduled in advance, the driver arrives at the designated time, and the transportation company bills the Medicaid plan directly. No cash changes hands.

How a Trip Works — Step by Step

  1. Scheduling: You or your caregiver calls your Medicaid plan’s transportation number 24–48 hours in advance.
  2. Confirmation: You receive a confirmed pickup time and driver information.
  3. Pickup: The driver arrives at your home at the scheduled time.
  4. Transport: You are taken directly to your medical appointment.
  5. Return trip: A return ride can be scheduled for after your appointment.

What Types of Vehicles Are Available?

  • Sedan or SUV — For ambulatory patients who can get in and out of a standard vehicle.
  • Wheelchair-accessible van (WAV) — For patients who use a manual or power wheelchair.
  • Ambulatory van — For patients who need extra space or assistance.
  • Stretcher transport — For patients who cannot sit upright (requires medical documentation).

What Appointments Qualify?

  • Primary care and specialist visits (all specialties)
  • Dialysis — up to 3 times per week
  • Physical, occupational, and speech therapy
  • Mental health and substance use treatment
  • Hospital follow-ups and diagnostic imaging
  • Lab work

Does It Cost Anything?

For eligible Medicaid members, the ride is fully covered — no copay, no cost to the patient.
